Snack Break
Crow stood perched on top of one of the many abandoned buildings in Hope City's "Old Town". As the name implied it was one of the oldest parts of the city and the only reason it hadn't been demolished yet was because a rather vocal majority wanted to "preserve the city's history". Unfortunately, the abandoned, dilapidated buildings were the prefect place for criminals to hide and conduct their illegal businesses, so the teenage crime fighter had to be on a state of constant alert for anything dangerous. Like the sound of the roof's access door swinging open on squeaky, rusty hinges behind her.
She spun around on her heel, causing her cape to flutter gently behind her, and only partially readied herself to attack should this not be the person she was expecting. She relaxed fully when the familiar hooded form of Scarlet Shadow pushed the old door open with her back as she carefully balanced a cardboard cup carrier in her left hand a rolled up paper bag in the other.
"Yeah don't help or anything," the other young heroine muttered when she caught sight of Crow.
"Just wanted to make sure you weren't some druggie or homeless guy coming up here to do God knows what," the black clad girl remarked as she walked over to her friend.
"Just take these right now, this door is surprisingly heavy," Scarlet Shadow remarked as she held out the drinks.
Crow walked over to her and took the cardboard carrier with her taped up hands which allowed the hooded heroine to use her now free hand to push the door open wide enough for her to squeeze through. Right after she did so, the door swung back with surprisingly quickness and slammed shut, cause the two jump a bit at the loud banging sound it produced. When she recovered from that shock, Crow looked down at the two white plastic cups embroiled with the Burger Land logo.
"So which one's mine?" she asked.
"One of the left," Scarlet Shadow replied as she rummaged through the bag she was holding. "Here we go, one double bacon cheeseburger and you already got the chocolate shake I see."
"Yep!" Crow replied happily after she took a sip of her shake.
She then took the wrapped burger from her friend's hand and smiled a bit at the amount of grease she could already see leaking through the thin layer of plastic which guaranteed a delicious meal. She then walked back over to the where she stood before and placed the food on the raised ledged before she turned back to the scarlet clad girl.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
"$6.50," the other girl responded after checking the receipt again.
"Geez, really?!" Crow cried out in surprise even as she opened a compartment on her built. "Apparently not ALL the crooks in this town work for the mob or dress up in crazy costumes," she muttered then produced a small stack of bills. "Here's seven."
"Thank you," Scarlet Shadow cheerfully replied as she stashed the money in her own belt.
The two then hopped up onto the ledge and let their legs dangle over the ten-story plummet, though neither seemed too concerned with that at the moment. They seemed much more invested in their meals. After a moment of mostly silent snacking, Scarlet Shadow finally looked over at Crow's food and shook her head a bit.
"What?!" Crow snapped.
"Sorry. I just can't get how you can eat that," she pointed to the burger, "and still stay in shape."
"First of all, you're not really one to judge Ms. Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Large Fries. Let me guess there's in there too, huh?"
Scarlet Shadow was quiet for a second.
"Shut up," she finally said weakly.
"Uh huh, that's what I thought," Crow nodded in satisfaction. "Secondly, you'd be amazed how much fighting gangbangers and crazy clowns helps burn off calories from stuff like this."
"Well not that surprised, but I see your point," the other girl remarked. "Guess superheroing is the ultimate workout session, huh?"
"Yep. So I gotta have plenty of protein to keep my energy up," Crow finished.
"And the chocolate shake?"
"That's just delicious," she smirked before taking a long drink from said shake. "So I bet the guy in the drive through window was pretty surprise when you pulled up, huh?"
Scarlet Shadow stopped just short of putting a few fries in her uncovered mouth and chuckled a bit at the memory of when she pulled up to pay and receive order.
"Oh yeah. Wasn't really sure what to do," she said with a chuckle. "It was kind of fun really."
"I'm sure it was," Crow chuckled back. "Shame I can't do stuff like that."
The other heroine quirked an eyebrow behind the rest of her mask.
"Doesn't Nitehawk have a car too?" she asked.
"Yeah but she barely lets me drive it," the black clad girl groaned. "Honestly you have no idea how lucky you are that you have your own car. How did you even get that thing anyway?"
The other girl slumped her shoulders and lowered her head just a bit before she answered.
"It's…it's a long story," she said softly.
"Oh," Crow replied, all too familiar with the implications that statement brought. "Look, I didn't…"
Scarlet Shadow shook her head and carefully waved it off with her hand holding the wrap.
"It's fine," she assured her. "Just not something I feel like talking about. Least not at the moment."
"I know how that is," the dark haired girl remarked.
"While we're on the subject of cars," the red clad girl said, quickly changing the subject, "why exactly does a bird themed hero have a car anyway? Shouldn't she have a jet or something?"
"Oh she does," Crow revealed before she took another bite of her burger. She waited until she finished it before she added, "And again she won't let me anywhere near the controls."
"So why doesn't she just use that one?"
"She says it's too conspicuous to use in the city."
"Right because those of us who dress in outlandish and/or brightly colored costumes really wouldn't want to do anything conspicuous now would we?" Scarlet Shadow asked with an amused smirk.
Crow laughed softly at the remarked then took another sip of her shake before she smirked herself as a rather interesting question crossed her mind.
"Speaking of us other heroes, there anyone you go the hots for?" she asked rather bluntly.
So bluntly, in fact, that she made Scarlet Shadow choke on her soda in surprise. The scarlet and crimson clad heroine coughed for a bit to clear out her windpipe before she stared at her friend in wide-eyed shock.
"What?!" she screamed.
"You heard me," Crow remarked, her smirk even wider at the fact she has surprised the other girl so.
"What kind of question is that?!" Scarlet Shadow shrieked again.
"The kind of question normal teenage girls ask each other. But instead of talking about boys in their class or whatever we're talking about other people in skin tight, brightly colored suits that may or may not have super powers."
"And since when do you do anything like a normal teenage girl?!"
"Hey come on!" Crow protested. "I can be girly if I want to be! I don't have to fit into the tom boy/sporty girl stereotype just cause I like to mix it up every now and then."
"And yet you do it so well," Scarlet Shadow joked.
"You're avoiding the question," the darker dressed girl muttered as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"Well it's kind of a tough one to answer given that there really aren't that many male superheroes our age," the red one pointed out.
Crow uncrossed her arms to reach down for her shake and took a long sip from the straw as she mulled over that statement.
"You know, you're right. I never noticed that before. Weird," she muttered.
"I know, right?!" Scarlet Shadow replied.
"Still doesn't get you out of the question though," Crow smirked.
"Oh come on! You expect me to pick from the adults?! That's just a little…weird isn't it?" she asked in disbelief.
The darker dressed heroine shifted a bit nervously at that question.
"It's not that weird," she muttered under her breath.
Scarlet Shadow was about to offer another rebuttal when she noticed her friend's apprehension to the statement. She stared at her for a moment before her eyes went wide behind the lenses of her mask and her currently exposed mouth dropped in shock.
"NOOOOOOO!" she screamed out again. "Don't tell me that you…? Who?!"
"It's…it's no one. Nevermind. Just drop it," Crow tried to dismiss her and took another quick bite of her burger.
"Oh no no no no no no! You started this missy and you're gonna answer the question!" Scarlet Shadow pried, suddenly feeling rather confident herself.
Crow sat in silence as she chewed the piece of bacon cheeseburger in her mouth and realized she might as well be eating a piece of her namesake since it was her who started this whole conversation. Still she supposed it was only fair and so she prepared herself for whatever reaction she was going to get as she took a sip of the last of her shake to help clear her mouth so she could speak.
"Fine. It's…Vigilant," she revealed sheepishly, a slight blush on her cheeks.
She then closed her eyes and waited for another scream of disbelief but instead she was merely met with silence. She then cracked one eye open behind her mask to take a peek and found her friend just sitting there staring at her. Several seconds of awkward silence followed before Scarlet Shadow finally found her voice again.
"Vigilant?" she asked as if she hadn't heard right. "You mean THE Vigilant?!"
"Yeah? So? What's wrong with that?" Crow asked, getting a bit defensive. "I mean aside from the obvious age thing."
"Well aside from that well…" Scarlet Shadow faltered. "I don't know, okay? It just seems…weird. I mean he's an alien but he looks human-"
"VERY human," Crow interrupted her in an almost dreamy voice.
"But it still seems weird to have those kinds of feelings for him. He's more like an…ideal than a real person, alien or human."
"Actually he's pretty nice and surprisingly laid back."
"Wait you actually MET him?!" Scarlet Shadow asked in surprise.
"Yeah. Few times he and Nitehawk worked on a case together," Crow waved off nonchalantly. "Like I said, nice guy. Real friendly. And let me tell you all those pics in the papers and on the net do NOT do him justice. Especially with just how ripped he is and how tight that costume actually is," she gushed as the redness in her cheeks returned in the flushed manner.
Scarlet Shadow just shook her head in amusement.
"Girl you got it bad!" she chuckled then took another bite of her wrap.
The remark seemed to snap Crow out of her daze and she glared at her friend.
"Fine then who do YOU like?!" she challenged.
The hooded heroine paused and placed a finger on her chin thoughtfully as she mulled the question over. She closed her eyes to better visualize the few male heroes around their ages that she could actually remember. After a few seconds of shuffling through her mental files she finally came upon one she liked.
"Well…I guess that Pulse guy from the one team, Generation Next?" she asked mostly herself. "Yeah sounds right. He's pretty cute."
"Oh," Crow frowned a bit.
"What? I didn't judge you on your choice!" Scarlet Shadow shot back. "That much."
"No it's not that, it's just that from what I've heard he'd rather be a part of this conversation than the subject of it," she pointed out.
"What? Really?" the red dressed girl asked.
"That's what I've heard."
"From who?"
"Well it's all over the net and the superhero community."
"Well 1) I don't believe everything I read on the net," Scarlet Shadow started holding up a finger on her free hand. "And 2) I'm not actually that connected to the superhero community so I wouldn't hear of these thing. Except of course through present company."
"Right, sorry, forgot about that," Crow apologized. "Still yeah from what's been going around in our circles. From what I've heard he's checked out a few of his teammates and some others as well."
"Huh. Guess the old saying it true, all the good ones are either taken or apparently like Pulse," Scarlet Shadow mused. "He's still kinda cute though."
"Suppose so. Still since that one kind of fizzled out you want to try again?"
She was about to answer when a terrified scream caught both their attentions. They immediately began to scan the alleyways below them trying to find where it came from. When a second scream broke through the night they realized it was coming from their lefts.
"There! That alley!" Scarlet Shadow exclaimed, pointing to a darkened alley near them.
"Just great, they couldn't even wait til I finished my burger, could they?" Crow grumbled as she rewrapped what was left of her meal and shoved it into the bag in between them.
"Yeah when will these criminals learn to be more considerate of other's feelings?" the other girl joked as she pulled her mask all the way down to cover the rest of her face.
After stuffing the rest of their half eaten meal into the red and white bag, Scarlet Shadow gathered it up to properly dispose of it while Crow pulled out her zip line launcher then wrapped her arm securely around her friend's waist.
"You know I'm gonna need to get my own one of those before rumors start up about us," she quipped.
"Not in the mood. I had to throw away my food and shake before finishing them so I'm annoyed and ready to take that out on some punk's head," Crow growled.
"Then let's be off into the night to fight the good fight once again!" Scarlet Shadow declared bravely as she pulled herself closer to the other girl for support.
Crow chose to ignore that rather corny remark as she fired off the zip line into one of the taller buildings around them and then the two did indeed fly off into the night to teach a couple of thugs not to mess with a superhero's snack time.
The End.

Well this was supposed to be a "quick" scene but it actually ended up taking longer than I thought thanks to...not really writer's block more like writer's...unfocus? If that's a word.
Anyway, this is just a fun little scene between Crow and Scarlet Shadow that's been running through my head for awhile and I just wanted to write it out to show of their personalities and their friendship. It does jump a bit into the Wonderverse but there's nothing too spoilerific in here.
Probably be seeing a bit more of scenes like this until I get my current, very long, fanfic done just cause my OCD won't let me offically start on another story until I get whichever one I'm working on at the moment done first. I know it's weird, but it's just the way I work.
Still my muse does think up little scenes like this so like I said they might pop up here and there to help flesh out the characters and the world some more. Hope you all enjoyed it.

Well that was an amusing little scene ^_^ Good interaction between the two and I thought it did a nice job of of showing off the type of friendship they have. I always did like scenes like this, superheroes don't always need to be to be bashing the bad guys to be interesting/amusing. Though I must wonder what Crow would think if she knew Vigilant was actually married.
I could see something like this happening in my own 'verse; I have quite a few teen characters that could have conversations like this heh
